Shipwreck Figaro 1879-1908. Trygghamna, Spitsbergen

Trygghamna, Spitsbergen. August 2018.The northernmost registered underwater cultural heritage site. Wreck Figaro - a three-masted barque built in Geestemunde, Germany in 1879. 178.6 feet long, 35.3 feet wide. In 1902 it was sold to Larvik and equipped as a whalery. It served in Svalbard starting in 1904. On the morning of July 25, 1908 caught fire and sank. 110 years ago... In 2007 Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority discovered the ship and registered as a possible wreck. NTNU/UNIS conducts the interdisciplinary research on the wreck. In 2015 the wreck was proved to be the Figaro. The research interests are among the marine archaeology, biology, and technology.

We, at LongyearbyenDykkerklubb, are happy to experience the dive to the wreck, learn the story and share what we have seen. The dive was conducted with respect of Svalbard Environmental Act 42.
